Vibe coding kya hai? Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI in everyday language, then accepting, testing and refining what it writes, often without reading the code line by line. Collins Dictionary defines it as "the use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code" (Collins). Where did "vibe coding" come from?
AI researcher Andrej Karpathy coined the term in a post on X on 3 February 2025 (IST):
"There's a new kind of coding I call 'vibe coding', where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists."
In the same post he said the approach was "not too bad for throwaway weekend projects" (Karpathy on X). The phrase spread fast: Collins Dictionary named "vibe coding" its Word of the Year for 2025 (The Guardian). Someone who builds this way is called a vibe coder, a derived form Collins also lists.
Vibe coding vs AI-assisted coding
The two get mixed up, but the difference is how much you check the code:

Many people start as vibe coders and gradually review more of the code as their app gets real users. That's the healthy path.
How vibe coding works (the loop)
- Describe the app in plain words: who it's for, what screens it has, what it should save.
- Generate: the AI writes the code and shows a live preview.
- Test: click everything, like a real user.
- Refine: report one problem at a time ("the save button does nothing") and paste any error messages.
- Ship: publish a link, then keep improving.

The risks (and how to stay safe)
Vibe coding is fast, but "forget the code exists" has costs once real people use your app:
- Security holes: exposed API keys, missing access rules on the database, unprotected admin pages. Run through our vibe coding security checklist before launch.
- Bugs you can't explain: the more the app grows, the harder it is to fix by prompting alone. Save versions (GitHub sync) so you can roll back.
- Credit and token burn: big vague prompts waste free limits. Small, specific requests are cheaper.
- Ownership and lock-in: check that you can export your code. Lovable, for example, says you own the code you build.
Karpathy's own framing is the best rule of thumb: great for throwaway and weekend projects; for anything serious, start reviewing what the AI writes.
