Claude Code Alternatives: 9 Free, Open-Source and Local Options

The best Claude Code alternatives in 2026 are OpenCode (open source, any model), OpenAI Codex (included with ChatGPT plans), Google Antigravity (has a $0 tier), Cline and Kilo Code (open-source editor agents), Goose and Aider (open-source terminal agents), Qwen Code and Cursor. People usually switch from Claude Code for one of three reasons: cost (Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or API credits), model choice (it's built around Claude), or wanting to run models locally. Each pick below names its licence, how you pay and what it's best for, from official pages and the GitHub API, checked on 17 October 2026.

Two changes most older lists miss: Roo Code's repository was archived in May 2026, and Gemini CLI was replaced by Antigravity CLI for free-tier and Google One users on 18 June 2026. Neither appears below as a main pick.

The best Claude Code alternatives

1. OpenCode: best open-source Claude Code alternative

OpenCode is the closest like-for-like swap: a terminal agent (plus desktop app and IDE extension) under the MIT licence that connects to 75+ providers and local models through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp (docs). You can sign in with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro, bring API keys, or use OpenCode Zen pay-as-you-go. Note that Anthropic doesn't allow Claude Pro/Max subscriptions in OpenCode. Full breakdown: OpenCode vs Claude Code.

2. OpenAI Codex: best if you already pay for ChatGPT

OpenAI Codex runs as an open-source CLI (Apache-2.0), IDE extension, desktop app and cloud agent. OpenAI's pricing page lists Codex with ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) and Pro (from $100/month), plus Go ($8/month) and a Free tier with more limited access; you can also use an API key. See Claude Code vs Codex.

3. Google Antigravity: best free tier from a big lab

Google's agent-first platform (desktop app, agy CLI, IDE and SDK) has a $0 plan alongside paid Pro and Ultra plans and credits (antigravity.google). It replaced Gemini CLI for unpaid users in June 2026. Our head-to-head: Claude Code vs Antigravity. If you only need the classic CLI, Gemini CLI is still open source (Apache-2.0), but check which tiers it still serves.

4. Cline: best open-source agent inside VS Code

Cline is an Apache-2.0 agent that works as an IDE extension, a CLI and an SDK. It has Plan and Act modes, and every file edit and terminal command needs your approval unless you turn on auto-approve. Connect your own provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, local models and more) and pay only for tokens (GitHub).

5. Kilo Code: best for switching between many models in the editor

Kilo Code is an MIT-licensed coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the CLI. Its README says you can pick from 500+ models, switch mid-task, and pay the provider's rate with zero markup, and it includes a Plan mode for designing before coding (GitHub). It's a natural home if you came from Roo Code, which has been archived.

6. Goose: best open-source agent with a desktop app

Goose is an Apache-2.0 agent with a desktop app and CLI, now part of the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation. It supports 15+ providers and, per its README, can use existing Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini subscriptions through ACP (GitHub). It also works with MCP extensions, which our agent tools directory catalogues.

7. Aider: best lightweight, git-first terminal agent

Aider (Apache-2.0) pairs with you in the terminal, edits files and commits each change to git with a sensible message, so every AI edit is easy to review or revert (aider.chat). It works with most cloud and local models. Development has slowed (its last push was in May 2026 when we checked), so it suits users who value stability over new features.

8. Qwen Code: best terminal agent for Qwen models

Qwen Code is the Qwen team's Apache-2.0 terminal agent. Its README says it supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Qwen APIs, plus local models through Ollama or vLLM, with switching at runtime (GitHub). Pair it with local LLM tools for a fully offline setup.

9. Cursor: best if you'd rather have an AI editor than a CLI

Cursor is a full AI code editor with an agent mode, tab completion and a choice of models, including Claude. It isn't open source or free for heavy use, but many people who find terminal agents awkward are happier here. See Cursor vs Claude Code.

How we picked

We included tools that do what Claude Code does (read a codebase, plan, edit files and run commands with approval) and that were actively available on 17 October 2026. Licences and star counts come from the GitHub API that day; prices and plans come from each vendor's own pricing page. We excluded archived projects (Roo Code) and tools that are mostly autocomplete. Order reflects how closely each tool matches Claude Code's job for a typical vibe coder, not a benchmark score.

How we ranked these tools

Rankings are editorial and never sold; sponsored placements are always labelled. We rank each tool for the specific job named in its heading, using what the tool's own website, docs and pricing page state. Pricing notes reflect the official pricing page at the time of writing (17 Oct 2026); prices and plans change, so confirm on the official site before you buy. FAQ

What is the best free alternative to Claude Code?

OpenCode is the closest free, open-source swap; pair it with local models or Zen's free models for zero token cost. Google Antigravity's $0 tier is the easiest free option from a major lab.

Is there an open-source version of Claude Code?

Claude Code itself is not open source. OpenCode (MIT), Cline (Apache-2.0), Goose (Apache-2.0), Aider (Apache-2.0) and OpenAI's Codex CLI (Apache-2.0) are open-source agents that do similar work.

Can I run a Claude Code alternative locally?

Yes. OpenCode, Cline, Goose, Aider and Qwen Code can all talk to local models served by Ollama or LM Studio, so your code never leaves your machine, though local models are usually weaker on complex tasks.

Can I use Claude models without Claude Code?

Yes, through an Anthropic API key in tools such as OpenCode, Cline or Aider, billed per token. Claude Pro/Max subscriptions are meant for Anthropic's own apps, and Anthropic prohibits using them in OpenCode.

Is Roo Code still maintained?

No. Its GitHub repository was archived in May 2026. Kilo Code and Cline are the closest maintained alternatives.
